Connecting Ideas and People: First LIR PhD & Postdoc Retreat in Bingen

On October 26–27, 2026, 23 early-career researchers gathered in Bingen for the first LIR PhD & Postdoc Retreat. Organized by Dr. India Sawyer, Dr. Alex Brown, and Dr. Larglinda Islami, the two-day event brought together doctoral and postdoctoral researchers from different research groups to exchange ideas, strengthen connections, and discuss how to shape the future of the early-career research community at LIR.

The program combined scientific exchange, professional development, and opportunities to get to know colleagues beyond their everyday working environments. Dr. Claudia Hackenberg from Research Coordination at LIR introduced participants to research funding opportunities and grant writing, providing the foundation for the interactive “Build Your Grant” workshop. Working in interdisciplinary teams, participants developed research proposals and presented their ideas to a jury consisting of Prof. Raffael Kalisch and Prof. Beat Lutz.

Another central focus was communication and collaboration within LIR. Through an interactive Mentimeter session, participants reflected on existing opportunities for exchange and discussed how these could be improved. The results revealed a clear desire for stronger connections across research groups, particularly through informal gatherings, methodological workshops, and more accessible scientific discussions.

Participants also explored ideas for improving public outreach, including science slams, public talks, podcasts, and social media activities. These discussions generated valuable suggestions for future initiatives led by the LIR early-career research community.

Beyond the scientific program, shared activities and informal conversations provided opportunities to connect on a personal level. The retreat also marked the election of the new LIR PhD representatives.

The first LIR PhD & Postdoc Retreat highlighted the importance of bringing early-career researchers together—not only to exchange scientific ideas, but also to actively shape a more connected and collaborative research environment at LIR.
