Preparing for future pandemics: The LIR in the Leibniz Lab Pandemic Preparedness

The LIR is part of the steering committee of the Leibniz Lab on Pandemic Preparedness, an interdisciplinary research network of the Leibniz Association. 41 Leibniz institutions are working on developing scientifically based strategies for dealing with future pandemics - from early detection and effective containment measures to societal resilience. This is achieved in four key areas: Interaction of the environment, animals and humans in relation to the emergence and spread of pathogens, reducing the physical and psychological burden of disease, efficient pandemic management and improvement of the resilience of education systems in pandemic situations:

The LIR is contributing its expertise on mental health and individual resilience. In two projects, the institute is investigating the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health in Germany and developing strategies to protect the mental health of at-risk groups such as teachers. The findings are important building blocks in interdisciplinary pandemic preparedness.
